About the Black Public Defender Association: The Black Public Defender Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing racial equity and social justice within the criminal justice system. We work tirelessly to empower and support Black public defenders, promote criminal justice reform, and advocate for fair and equitable treatment of Black individuals within the legal system. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Communications Director to join our team and help us amplify our mission through strategic communication efforts.
Job Summary: The Black Public Defender Association is seeking a Part-Time Communications and Marketing Manager to execute our communication strategy. The ideal candidate is passionate about criminal justice reform, possesses exceptional communication skills, and has a proven track record in crafting and implementing effective communication plans. As the Communications manager, you will report to the Vice President of Communications and be responsible for creating and disseminating compelling content, managing media relations, and building and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders. You will work in partnership with the BPDA’s Director of Digital, as well as a slew of consultants who work on behalf of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with the organization’s goals and mission.
- Create and curate high-quality, engaging, and informative content for various platforms, including social media, newsletters, website, press releases, and more.
- Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to ensure the organization’s message reaches a wider audience. Draft and distribute press releases and media pitches.
- Collaborate with other team members and external partners to engage with key stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, and community members.
- Ensure consistency in the organization’s branding and messaging across all communication channels.
- Manage and implement a marketing calendar and manage the production of high-quality, multi-format content.
- Manage design consultants to ensure graphics are delivered in a timely fashion.
- Ensure consistent messaging, tone, and brand voice across all marketing materials.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to enhance content relevance and expand reach.
- Manage the production of digital and print marketing materials, reports, campaigns, and publications.
- Ensure consistency with the organization’s visual brand and enforce brand guidelines across departments.
- Monitor and analyze content trends, audience preferences, and emerging technologies to enhance content delivery.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions to optimize content workflows.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher required, preferably in communications, advertising, marketing, social sciences, and/or journalism
- 5 years of experience in marketing/communications for an association, nonprofit or advocacy organization
- 3-5 years of experience with creating or managing the creation of publications, flyers, logos and graphics
- Experience marketing conferences and events
- Experience with conference and event coverage is a plus
- Proficient in the use of Photoshop, Canva, and video editing software
- Demonstrated knowledge of Facebook Ads Manager
- Ability to design or direct the creation of graphics, and videos for use on social media platforms
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Experience cultivating a social media following, including pitching influencers, to increase brand awareness
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Demonstrated understanding of the role of a membership association
- Knowledge of criminal justice issues and a passion for criminal justice reform
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Commitment to racial equity and social justice
